Officer Elections - On the Move


A decision was reached at our last membership meeting to move officer elections to the Spring semester to ensure more fluid organizational operations and smoother transitions between new and exiting officers. It is my pleasure to share the following position descriptions and cordially ask for nominations. Nonprofit Leadership Student Association





President

Job Responsibilities:
·Is a member in good standing of the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association.
·Serves as the Chief Volunteer of the organization.
·Provides leadership to the Executive Committee, who sets policy for NLSA.
·Chairs meetings of the membership after developing the agenda with the Executive Committee.
·Encourages strategic planning.
·Appoints the chairpersons of committees, in consultation with other Executive Committee members.
·Serves ex officio as a member of committees and attends their meetings when invited.
·Reviews with the Executive Committee any issues of concern to the Membership.
·Monitors financial planning and financial reports.
·Plays a leading role in fundraising activities.
·Informally evaluates the effectiveness of the Executive Committee members.
·Evaluates annually the performance of NLSA in achieving its mission.

Vice President of Student Events

Job Responsibilities:
·Is a member in good standing of the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association.
·Reports to the President.
·Works closely with the President, Executive Committee, and Membership.
·Works closely with the President to develop and implement officer transition plans.
·Organize welcome events for new and returning students at the beginning of each semester.
·Collect proposals from NLSA members for different events the group would like to implement, assist in organizing at least one other NLSA event each year.

Vice President of University Policy and Procedure

Job Responsibilities:
·Is a member in good standing of the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association.
·Reports to the President.
·Works closely with the President, Executive Committee, and Membership.
·Works closely with the President to develop and implement officer transition plans.
·Ensures effective management of NLSA's records.
·Is sufficiently familiar with legal documents (University guidelines, bylaws, IRS letters, etc.) to note applicability during meetings.
·Is responsible for interfacing with the Student Activities Office at UW-Milwaukee and ensuring that NLSA remains compliant with University requirements.
·Attends Council of Student Organizations and other University meetings when applicable.

Vice President of Membership

Job Responsibilities:
·Is a member in good standing of the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association.
·Reports to the President.
·Works closely with the President, Executive Committee, and Membership.
·Works closely with the President to develop and implement officer transition plans.
·Manages the membership list, ensuring dues are collected.
·Responsible for member communications via the University listserve, website, etc.
·Ensures minutes are taken and distributed to members shortly after each meeting.

Vice President of Finance

Job Responsibilities:
·Is a member in good standing of the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association.
·Reports to the President.
·Works closely with the President, Executive Committee, and Membership.
·Works closely with the President to develop and implement officer transition plans.
·Ensures effective management of NLSA's finances, maintains appropriate records.
·Administrates fiscal matters of the organization.
·Provides annual budget to the board for members' approval.
·Ensures development and board review of financial policies and procedures.

Resettlement Services Intern with the International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee of Atlanta is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Atlanta area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.

The Resettlement Services Program is the first point of contact for newly arrived refugees and offers support, guidance and counseling though all stages of resettlement. Case managers provide initial services to orient refugees to life in the U.S., including (but not limited to) securing housing, addressing medical concerns, registering children in school, applying for Social Security and Georgia ID cards, and linking refugees to our internal and mainstream services. Case managers also offer counseling in home-budgeting, crisis intervention, family counseling and other areas of social adjustment. Employment is an essential element in helping refugees become economically self-sufficient. Job Developers work closely with Case Managers as part of the Resettlement Services team to support all aspects of clients' employment.

Basic Responsibilities:

The Resettlement services intern will assist case managers with the following tasks:

• MARTA orientation (to IRC, health clinic, job, shopping centers)

• Activation of EBT cards for food stamps

• Follow-up with DFCS on public assistance issues

• Obtaining Georgia IDs for newly arrived refugees

• Assisting clients with doctor’s appointments and researching appropriate medical providers for refugees and/or low-income families

• Registering refugee children for school

• Securing housing and furniture for newly arrived refugee families

• Assisting staff and clients with grocery shopping 

• Researching potential employers and job possibilities for IRC clients

• Assisting clients with writing resumes and preparing for job interviews

• Taking clients for job interviews and employment orientations, and helping them complete job applications

• Providing general administrative support

Requirements:

• Excellent communication and writing skills

• Organized with attention to detail
• Able to work independently and under pressure

• An interest in international and refugee issues

• Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects

• Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting

• Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems

• A car/driver’s license is beneficial

Internship with the IRS

Summer Opportunity for Nonprofit Management/ Policy Graduate Students
 
Do you know a promising future nonprofit professional looking for an 
interesting summer internship?  If so, please let them know about an 
exciting internship opportunity with IRS Exempt Organizations.
 
As part of  the Exempt Organizations Academic Institutions 
Initiative, an effort to reach out to academic Institutions that 
offer programs designed to train non-profit leaders for the 21st 
century, EO intends to hire two to three graduate student interns to 
work with our Rulings and Agreements and Customer Education and 
Outreach staff at our TE/GE Headquarters in Washington, DC this summer.
 
The program will offer graduate students in nonprofit management and 
policy a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge base and learn 
about the tax rules and responsibilities that apply to exempt 
organizations.

Officer Elections

Twenty-one days from now, on March 9, the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association at UW - Milwaukee will be voting on a change to its bylaws. It has been proposed that officer elections are moved from the Fall Welcoming Reception to Spring semester to foster a smoother officer transition and more organized fall semester. Compliant with our bylaws - all members in good standing are eligible to vote on this matter provided three weeks advance notice. I encourage all of you to come and share your input regarding this proposed change and take part in a vote that will impact the future of our organization.
